The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra presents a compelling program of Elgar’s Falstaff and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in a concert that promises emotional depth and dramatic contrast. One of Elgar’s most vivid orchestral works, Falstaff is a richly detailed portrait of Shakespeare’s infamous rogue—by turns comic, noble, and tragic. Its sweeping themes and colourful orchestration bring Falstaff’s story to life with warmth and poignancy.

In the second half, Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 10 offers a stark contrast. Written shortly after Stalin’s death, the symphony is intense and introspective, moving from brooding darkness to defiant energy. The famous second movement is a whirlwind of fury, while the third introduces Shostakovich’s personal musical signature. The finale offers a hard-won sense of triumph, tinged with irony.

Celebrating over 80 years of music-making, the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the UK’s leading orchestras, known for its ambitious repertoire and high-calibre performances. This concert is a showcase of two masterworks that explore character, conflict, and the human spirit—brought vividly to life by this accomplished orchestra.
